Where Does Your Site Rank?

Where Does Your Site Rank?

I was recently on a conference call with a client, and we were discussing current and future strategy for their web properties. As always, we also talk about site rankings and traffic, and their relative positioning compared to other sites/competitors in the space.

As I've mentioned in earlier posts, we consistently compete with and out-rank other sites in the same spaces that have significantly higher budgets. Sometimes I come across clients that are paying way more for services that might look pretty, but are missing some key elements. There are many "SEO Companies" out there that can produce slick images, designs and generic content, but there are ingredients we bring to the table that simply don't compare. Not only are we very reasonably priced, but we provide customized strategies that go beyond just basic content, SEO and social media to help increase the overall online visibility your company, product or service. Of course, there are also plenty of things we don't do, so we're happy to work in a collaborative effort with other service providers or agencies to develop and execute the best overall plan for each client within their budgetary guidelines.

We recently completed a 2 year consulting agreement with a start-up that resulted in their ranking highly on the first page for a slew of their most desired keyword phrases. Not only that, but we worked with their in-house people and other vendors to consult with them on many strategic and tactical moves. If they continue with these things, they'll be able to maintain their positioning and stay atop their competitors in the search engine rankings.

Another thing to watch out for with many SEO companies is how they evaluate your keywords and what performance measures are in place regarding them. Some companies will pick words and phrases that may appear great, but doe they result in more clicks/calls/sales? In other words, what's the real end game? Ranking in and of itself for some seemingly good keywords isn't the real goal for most people, and higher traffic numbers without conversion isn't that good, either. It is important to know how to reach your ideal customer and get them to take action.

Quality of Visitors Counts as Much as Quantity

We have several clients who work in a similar industry but do not overlap or compete, as they provide different functions and are in different locations as well.

One of the things we do is listen to what they say their ideal customers are - what they're saying and what they're looking for. We then take the time to help them develop content around what those sets of keywords and phrases are for search engine purposes as well as of course the readers. We not only propose and write content specific for them, but also consult on other ares of their PR and marketing strategies.

We have had stellar results with all three of these clients reaching desired keyword phrases that have helped position them so that they are getting more of their ideal visitors. One company was brand new and competing with others in their industry that had been around for decades, yet they hit #1 in Google for a crucial local keyword. Another client was also new to their space and was able to reach the top spot for a variety of desired words and phrases, resulting in a dramatic decrease in their paid search costs. The other company was able to get first-page results in a dozen or more coveted keywords, effectively competing with other companies that spend at least ten times the amount in monthly online marketing costs.

For all three, the quality of their visitors increased their efficiency considerably. We certainly can't take all the credit, though. With all of these companies there were vital contributions from their in-house teams as well as their design partners to help keep visitors on the site and help convert them into leads. This is an important fact - that it usually takes a team of people who bring their own areas of expertise.
